Susan Kelly, RN, LA, owner of Skin Klinic & Day Spa, is a Registered Nurse with 30 years experience as well as an aesthetician. 

Born and raised in Rockland, Sue brings that experience as a health professional to the spa.  She is passionate about skin care and caring for people.  Sue sees The Skin Klinic as an extension of her nursing career.  “We have the best of all worlds here at the Skin Klinic and Day Spa, with medically and aesthetically trained staff in a spacious, relaxed, and serene environment.”

Medomak Valley Land Trust opened a hiking trail on Clarry Hill today.  The trail meanders over scenic blueberry fields, into forests and by breathtaking views.

Why Meandering Maine?

Meandering Maine may be the new kid on the block but our roots go deep in Maine.  I grew up in the Mid-Coast and parts of my family are original settlers.

My (Rachael Umstead) grandmother Charlotte Hunt Pease of Union – originally from Iona Farm in Lincolnville handling her calf Mistro at the Fryeburg  fair.

My great-great-great Uncle Oscar Howe of Howe Hill in Camden working Oxen at the Howe Farmstead.

My great-great-great Uncle Walter Howe, brother to my grandmother Alice Howe Hunt and Oscar (above),  from the Maine book Frost You Say and some what of a local legend.  Walter lived at the Howe Farmstead in Camden until the late 1980’s.  His and my ancestors the Woster family were some of the original settlers of North Haven.

My husband David, my infant son Henry and I this summer at Marshall Point Lighthouse.

I am one of the many people who left Maine right out of high school.  And one of the fortunate to have returned.  I have been to different parts of the world, barring none, nothing compares to the majestic draw of Maine.  I believe that’s why so many choose to call this place home – whether they live in Florida and return for one week out of the year, they come back after years of exile or they never left – Maine is home.  It’s the spirit of the people who call Maine home that draws others to visit our rugged, scenic shoreline drives, funky, inland villages or our enchanting local inns year after year.  That’s the Maine we love and that’s Maine everyone’s looking for – that’s Meandering Maine.  Love Maine!

October in the North Woods

I spent the week guiding grouse and woodcock hunters at Libby Camps in the North Maine Woods. It is always a joy to work with other professionals delivering a great experience. There is nothing like visiting a sporting camp in Northern Maine. First the vastness of the country is always impressive, as is the almost complete silence when you are out in the woods. Meals are always an event and it is a hard job to not eat way more than I should. Not to mention desserts that are usually fresh baked and delicious.

The dogs are in their glory working each day from beginning to end and loving every minute. Copper the young pointer is coming into her own after three years and Mae the older dog is very much an old pro. Finding birds regularly and with great style. Woody the golden retriever does not get as much time as he would like but sees some time hunting each day. We were all part of the filming of a video on upland bird hunting at Libby Camps that will be posted to their web site later this winter. I'll post a link when it is available this winter.

Needless to say all four of us are enjoying a slightly different guiding schedule from now until early November.

Take a Walk ‘Round Hockomock

The drive down Keene Neck Road off Route 32 in Bremen is an inviting and charming prelude that creates anticipation for a beautiful walk in this seaside wildlife sanctuary.   Step out of the car and your senses are met by the ocean air and glimpses of spruce lined shores. 

Maine Audubon Society’s Todd Wildlife Sanctuary is open daily from dawn to dusk.
